Why take ASA118 Docking and Maneuvering at Delmarva Sailing School?
Our ASA118 docking class is unique because we teach docking on a larger 39 foot sailboat compared to most other schools, who typically utilize a 30-32 foot sailboat. Learning to dock a 39-foot sailboat is much harder than docking a smaller sailboat and more realistic preparation for chartering or sailboat ownership, making our docking class the finest docking class available anywhere. By the time you complete our ASA118 docking class you will feel like you finally have it and know how to dock a 39-foot sailboat. All Delmarva Sailing School ASA118 Docking and Maneuvering Classes are taught on the 39′ Pearson sloop ‘Gallivant’.
Class Description:
Take our ASA118 Docking and Maneuvering Class and gain the knowledge and skills to safely and competently dock and maneuver a sailboat under auxiliary power in a variety of conditions on fixed and floating docks. Includes knowledge of steering and propulsion theory, wind and current, safety precautions, and knots and line handling.
Class size: 3-4 typically with a maximum of five students allowed.
Prerequisites: ASA101 and ASA118.
Itinerary: Day one-
Docking students learn how to steer in tight quarters in both a forward and aft direction, how to stop the boat under power in both directions. This gets the students used to switching gears and throttling up and down before getting close to hard objects.
Learn how to perform a standing turn in tight quarters.
Learn to pull up alongside a dock, simulating a fuel dock approach.
Learn how to use warp lines to turn the boat using pilings. Students learn to warp in and warp out of slips in tight quarters.
Learn to go bow into a slip.
Learn to go stern into a slip. By the time you finish up on day one you are backing into a slip with other boats in close quarters.
Itinerary Day 2-
On day two we focus on practicing what we learned on day one by students taking turns docking and undocking the boat throughout the day. Students take turns putting the boat into the slip, and choose whether they want to go bow in, stern in, warp in, warp out, standing turn, pull up alongside, etc. This time when the student decides the docking method is likely the most important part of the class for most students, in that it lets them practice with docking methods where they need practice and is a confidence builder.
Finally, the class ends with a written test and ASA118 Docking and Maneuvering Certification.
