ASA102 Keelboat 2 Sailing Class: Although ASA102 is numerically between ASA101 and ASA103, ASA102 Keelboat 2 is not a prerequisite for ASA103 or any higher ASA Sailing Classes, and may be taken even by students who have already completed ASA103 and ASA104 on the water sailing classes.

ASA102 Keelboat 2 is a sail trim class for students who want to focus on improving and perfecting their sailing skills over two days. Great emphasis is put on understanding the angle of attack, sail shape, and twist to achieve proper sail trim when close hauled, reaching, or running, and how to use sail controls, including main sheet, jib sheet, genoa track cars, halyard tension, traveler, outhaul, boom vang, and leech line in both upwind and downwind sailing. Also learn how to use sail trim to steer upwind and downwind without the use of the rudder, how to properly steer and trim sails when ducking around objects on the water, how to use the Slow and Go technique to approach a mooring under sail, and how to apply an air brake to stop. Demonstrate Figure eight and Quick Stop Man Overboard Recovery and Heaving-to.

In addition to the ASA102 Textbook, all our ASA102 Keelboat 2 students receive our internally developed Captain In You ASA102 Keelboat 2  Study Guide, which has proven effective in helping new students quickly learn the information required to gain ASA102 certification and cruise safely on their own.  Due to the volume of sail trim and boat handling content in the textbook, the Captain In You ASA102 Keelboat 2 Study Guide is essential in allowing students to know what is most important to study for the ASA102 Keelboat test.  ASA102 students should utilize the CIY ASA102 Study Guide as their main approach to learning the concepts in ASA102 Keelboat 2.  This class returns to our marina in Rock Hall at the end of each day since we will be performing many drills and do not have time to sail to a destination.

Class size: 2-5 students.

Prerequisites: ASA101.

Price includes the following:

  1. ‘Boat Handling and Sail Trim Made Easy’ ASA102 Textbook by ASA
  2. Captain In You ASA102 Keelboat 2 Study Guide
  3. ASA102 Test
  4. ASA102 Certification
  5. On board Breakfasts and Lunches
  6. No hotels are needed since students live aboard our yacht for free, including staying on board the evening before their class start date, and all days of the class.
  7. Students can bring their own Personal Flotation Device (PFD) or use one of the boats’ Type V PFDs with tethers for free.

At the end of each day of the class, students can hang out at Haven Harbour South Marina, have dinner at one of the two restaurants, visit the Haven Harbour South store and boat chandlery, go for a swim in the pool, ride free bikes or kayaks, or relax on the white sandy beach.  Please see the Location page for more information on Haven Harbour South Marina.
