ASA101 Basic Keelboat Sailing Class:

Beginning students should start with our fun and informative two-day ASA101 Basic Keelboat Sailing class.  Our ASA101 Basic Keelboat Course is taught in a live-aboard program, where students live on the boat and are fully immersed in learning to sail. and no hotels are needed.

ASA101 Basic Keelboat Sailing is a beginner-level sailing class that is taught entirely on the water on one of our two 39-foot Sailboats, ‘Gallivant’ or ‘Invictus’, so no classroom is needed.  Although ASA101 classes officially run from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM each day, since most students live aboard our sailboat, they are immersed in learning to sail 24 hours a day, making it easy to learn.  Both sailboats offer maximum comfort, with air conditioning, a galley, a head, refrigeration, and comfortable sleeping berths.  Onboard breakfasts and lunches are included, so no restaurants are needed except for dinner, which is eaten in local restaurants.  Students who prefer to stay in a hotel or commute in each day should arrive no later than 9:00 AM both days.

In addition to the ASA Basic Keelboat Sailing Textbook, all our ASA101 students receive our internally developed Captain In You ASA101 Basic Keelboat Study Guide, which has proven effective in helping new students quickly learn the information required to gain ASA certification and cruise safely on their own.  During the class, your expert instructor will review all concepts presented in the ASA101 Basic Keelboat Study Guide, ensuring that students fully grasp each concept.

Students learn everything they need to sail, including sailing vocabulary, principles of sailing, how to rig/hoist/set sails, how to obtain proper sail trim using outhaul, boom vang, mainsheet, jib sheets, winches, and traveler.  Learn to steer both under engine and sail, learn to come about and jibe properly, learn about safety equipment, learn proper commands at the helm, learn to head up and bear away, learn to sail on various points of sail, including close hauled, close reach, beam reach, and broad reach, and much more.

Students sail in one of the most beautiful parts of the Chesapeake Bay between Rock Hall and the Annapolis Bay Bridge. Class size: 3-4, with a maximum of five.

Prerequisites: None.  This class is taught assuming students know nothing about sailing when they arrive, but by the time students leave, they can sail on a fundamental level and have a foundation for taking more advanced classes.
