Class Description:
ASA104 Bareboat Cruising Class: 3-day all-on-the-water live-aboard program where students learn the duties of skipper and crew as they sail a sloop-rigged, auxiliary-powered 39′ sailboat during a multi-day cruise upon inland waters in moderate to heavy winds and sea conditions. Learn about how to perform cruise planning, provisioning, use of boat systems, use an auxiliary engine, advanced sail trim, coastal navigation, anchoring/mooring, docking procedures, emergency operations, weather, and more.
ASA104 Bareboat Cruising Class Goals:
- Help students master the remaining knowledge they need after taking ASA101 and ASA103 to charter and/or own their own sailboat and cruise safely and efficiently.
- Allow students to demonstrate this mastery by having them take turns being captain to show they can properly and safely handle a 39′ sailboat.
Itinerary Day One- Students make a detailed navigation plan using paper and pencil chart methods and a chart plotter. Don’t be surprised, however, if the instructor turns off the chart plotter at some point so students can find their position using a two-bearing fix and follow the written navigation plan mark to mark. On day one, the instructor will oversee the vessel, and students should pay careful attention, so they learn how he handles the boat for when they have their turn as captain. During day one, the instructor will also review the engine, mechanical, electrical systems, and sail plan to familiarize the students.
Itinerary Days Two and Three- Students make navigation plans to the next destinations and take turns being captain and crew. This is typically a time of great learning for students as they take charge and demonstrate their ability to control the crew and boat safely to destinations like Annapolis, Galesville, Herrington Harbor, St. Michaels, Bodkin Creek, and others. The time when the students act as captain is not meant to be a pass-fail test for ASA 104 Certification, but instead is a time for the students to discover their weaknesses without consequence to improve. Evaluating students for ASA104 Certification considers written and on-the-water skills like what students experience in earning ASA101 and ASA103 Certification. The instructor will act as crew when the student captains are in charge and only intercede if the vessel is in peril or if a teaching moment is needed to add to the student’s knowledge.
