If you want to become an ASA-certified sailing Instructor, you must earn Instructor Certification for any ASA Certification level you wish to teach. ASA student-level classes include ASA 101, ASA 102, ASA 103, etc. Instructor-level certifications are similar, but all begin with a 2, such as ASA201, ASA202, ASA203, etc.
To gain ASA Instructor Certification, you must attend an ASA Instructor Qualification Clinic (IQC) at an ASA-affiliated sailing School. An ASA-affiliated sailing school will have an ASA Certified Master Instructor evaluate your sailing knowledge and skills.
Testing is rigorous. The ASA201 certification includes a written test similar in difficulty to the USCG exam. Your sailing ability is also evaluated on the water. An ASA201 IQC typically takes 2 days, followed by one day each for ASA202, ASA203, etc. You must start with ASA201. ASA202, ASA203, ASA204, and ASA218 start at 9:00 AM and finish around 5:00 PM. ASA201 starts at 9:00 AM on day one and ends at 5:00 PM on day 2. ASA206 is a nighttime standard, so the ASA206 IQC starts at 1:00 PM and finishes at midnight. The ASA205 IQC starts at 9:00 AM and ends around noon so that you can complete ASA205 and ASA206 in a single day. ASA217 and ASA207 IQCs start at 9:00 AM on day one and end around noon on day two. ASA201 – No 200-level prerequisites, but you must already be ASA101 Certified or willing to challenge ASA101. You can challenge ASA101 during the clinic if you schedule in advance. You can see the cost to challenge ASA101 on the link below:
ASA202- Prerequisite is ASA201.
ASA203- Prerequisite is ASA201. ASA202 is not a prerequisite for ASA203.
ASA204- Prerequisites are ASA201 and ASA203.
ASA205- Prerequisites are ASA201 and ASA203.
ASA206- Prerequisites are ASA201, ASA203, ASA204, and ASA205.
ASA207- Prerequisites are ASA201 and ASA205
ASA217- Prerequisites are ASA201, ASA203, ASA204 and ASA205
ASA218- Prerequisites are ASA201 and ASA203.
You do not need to have a USCG Merchant Mariner Credential to participate in an ASA IQC. Still, to teach ASA Certified Sailing Classes on an auxiliary sailboat, you must have a US Coast Guard-issued Merchant Mariner Credential. (MMC). The minimum MMC required is Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessels (OUPV), commonly referred to as a “6-pack” or “Charter boat Captain’s License.
All on-the-water Instructor Qualification Clinics are conducted at Delmarva Sailing School on a 39-foot Pearson sloop.
All Instructor Qualification Clinics are run by Captain Michael Brown, ASA Master Instructor and USCG 50 Ton Ocean Master. Our IQCs are different from other ASA sailing school clinics, many of which are impersonal and pass/fail. Captain Mike takes a caring approach and is patient with potential instructors. He guides them on best practices for teaching sailing at all levels and mentors them to help them achieve their goals.
